Budding local cook Kelly James from Chelmsford, Essex, has won a three way cook-off in London after being selected by Aldi to create her signature dish for TV chef Phil Vickery.
Having beaten nearly 100 budding cooks from across the country to secure a place as one of the three finalists in Aldi’s Customer Cooking Competition, Kelly James secured the competition’s top prize.
Kelly will see her recipe being made into an exclusive dish and sold in Aldi stores across her region. As the lucky winner, Kelly will also receive an Aldi food and drink hamper each month for a year to keep her cooking.
Kelly James put forward one of her family favourites, Spicy Lamb, Chickpea and Butternut Tagine, for the nationwide competition last year. The dish then faced a panel of Aldi’s top food experts, who judged the dish on innovation, choice of ingredients and commercial appeal, winning Kelly a place in the competition’s final.
On winning the competition and having the chance to have her family favourite served in homes across the country, Kelly said: “I entered this competition as a way of sharing one of my home-cooked dishes with people; to think that my favourite could soon be stocked in my local supermarket is amazing!”
In order to win her top prize, Kelly managed to win over a panel of Aldi judges, as well as TV chef Phil Vickery.
Phil has been involved with the short listing process as well as the live cook-off, commenting: “I have a real passion for simple, tasty dishes made with quality ingredients. It was great to see the finalists sharing this philosophy with their recipes. The standard of all three entries was extremely high and Kelly’s Spicy Lamb was delicious. I’m sure Aldi customers will enjoy tucking into this dish once it hits the shelves.”
